Course Contents

Overview

The attendees on this course will be immersed in an incident and perform the role of a company family liaison representative.  Delegates will be asked to participate in four exercises / role-plays that will present themselves as the incident progresses.  A family liaison log and relevant paperwork will be sent out before attendance for completion during this module.

Exercise 1

The first exercise play will involve receiving a briefing and pre-deployment tasks from your company head of human resources. Thereafter, you will make an initial call to the next of kin of a crime victim. The objectives to achieve during this meeting include:

- Articulate your role
- Set the scene outlining the situation, FACTS
- Gather information, (active listening)
- Articulate the reality of the situation
- Plan for contact from various stakeholders
- Listen to requests
- Explain and reassure the effects on body and mind
- Suggest coping strategies
- Outline the future, what to expect.

Exercise 2

As the incident progresses in time, the second exercise will test resilience in dealing with demanding family members. During this role play you will be expected to:

- Be Honest
- Not mislead
- Treat all parties with respect
- Offer timely information
- Be consistent with other sources
- Convince the family to accept one point of contact
- Treat all requests confidently
- Adapt your communication to the audience (children).

Exercise 3

The third role play involves a challenging task: You will be asked to obtain ‘proof of life’ questions and outline the sequence of events of a kidnap scenario. There will be many questions for you to answer and detail to impart.

Exercise 4

During long-running incidents, a family meeting will often allay fears and grievances and presents an opportunity for senior staff of companies to engage with a larger family unit.  You will be asked to lead a video conference with several family members.

Exercise 5 (optional)

An optional exercise involves debriefing victims. This will be offered for longer or more bespoke courses, where the client wishes to explore this area of competence.  Here the student will debrief a vulnerable victim. During this exercise you will be expected to:

- Build rapport
- Encourage the victim to tell their story by using appropriate open questions and allowing free narrative
- Set boundaries and manage expectations
- Close the debrief leaving the victim in a calm mood and feeling positive
- Explain what/where on-going support is located
- Explain the psychological effects on the victim and offer the appropriate advice.
